Society, in the present day, is a lot more different from the society our grandparents and probably our parents lived in back in their times. The kind of lifestyle they lived included activities which were not only beneficial for their physical growth but also made them well aware of different sports and knowledge related to them. However, the scenario has drastically changed today.
With societies evolving rapidly, people's lifestyle transformation is quite observable. Humans are compared to machines for we have been running round the clock every day not saving up enough time for our “self-care”. The food we eat is usually processed, thus, the amount of nutrients is very low in our diets. According to recent data, around 38% of the Indian population have a desk job, which proves a low physical activity involvement.
Living in the digital age has its own set of boons and curses. While having access to technology makes our life easier, it also brings about some undesirable changes which have long-term effects. Parents tend to use mobile phones or other digital devices to let their children play or remain distracted to keep themselves free. This is where everything goes down the hill. Children become more and more engrossed in the screens, playing online games or chatting with their peers over different social media platforms, thus, spending the majority of their time indoors. It is therefore our responsibility to engage ourselves, and also motivate the younger generation, to come out of their screens and enjoy the “real” world.
Sports is such an activity which not only improves our physical growth but also strengthens our mental health. Through sports, one can learn integral values like cooperation, sportsmanship spirit, discipline and other important ethics. Being involved in sports also means having a proper diet with adequate nutrients. The individuals are conscious of their physical and mental health which keeps them aloof from the majority of illnesses. Sports prevent various lifestyle diseases like hypertension, Diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, etc, ensuring endurance and greater lifespan.
The Covid-19 pandemic is a recent example of how important it is to keep ourselves fit and resistant to any diseases. It was a testimony of the famous line “survival of the fittest”. Millions of people perished due to weak immune systems. Despite having advanced science, the mortality rate was at its peak for the poor lifestyle of human beings.
It’s high time we understand the value of Sports and Health and pledge to make changes in our daily routines and spare at least an hour for our fitness to live a healthy and disease-free life.
